I was so excited to receive Danika Cooley’s newest books in her Who, What, Why series—and let me just say, it did not disappoint! If you’re looking for a solid, Bible-based resource to teach your kids about the gospel, the disciples, and the resurrection, this set is a fantastic place to start.

Let me walk you through what each book is about and why I highly recommend this series for your homeschool, Sunday school class, or children’s ministry.

Book One: Who Were the Disciples?

This book introduces kids to the twelve disciples in a way that’s both informative and personal. Danika shares each disciple’s background—what they did, what they were like, and how Jesus completely transformed their lives.

There’s a lot of information in this one, and it’s perfect for helping children connect the dots between Bible stories they’ve heard and the real-life followers of Christ. I especially recommend downloading the free lapbook that goes with this book—it’s a wonderful tool to reinforce what your child is learning (more on that below!).

Book Two: What Was the Cross?

This book explains the history of the cross and how it came to be used as a form of punishment. It also highlights how many of Jesus’ followers gave their lives for their faith—some of them even dying on crosses themselves.

It’s powerful, thought-provoking, and a great introduction to why the cross matters so much in our faith.

Book Three: Why Did the Resurrection Happen?

This is where the gospel message really comes alive. Danika does a beautiful job of explaining that,

we are all guilty of sin and can’t pay the penalty for it—no matter how many good things we do.

She presents the gospel clearly and lovingly: Jesus, God’s perfect Son, came to earth, died for our sins, and rose again three days later. When we believe this truth, confess our sins, and place our trust in Him, we can be sure of eternal life in heaven.

She even tackles deeper theological concepts like the Trinity and how Jesus is both God and man—topics that can be tricky for kids (and adults!), but she explains them in a way that kids can begin to understand and accept by faith.

Here’s what stood out to me as a mom and teacher:

• Age Range: Geared toward ages 7–12
• Readability: Large, easy-to-read font and spacing
• Visuals: Black-and-white illustrations on nearly every page (though I wish they weren’t printed right in the center crease!)
• Biblical Depth: Solid teaching on salvation, discipleship, and Christian doctrine in kid-friendly language
