Being part of the Homeschool Review Crew, my daughter and I have had the wonderful opportunity to use the Beginner Level, Art Core I, Drawing with Graphite Pencils course from ARTistic Pursuits.

This art education course consisted of a hard-bound textbook, that contained two dvd’s, and access to the online course of lessons.

The course itself is for fourth grade and up, and is very easy to use and follow.  This is a one-semester class designed to be done two times a week for about an hour.

You do need to purchase your own art supplies, but the list is minimal and easy to find at any art supply or hobby store.

In order to complete the course, you will need:
4 graphite drawing pencils
1 Prismacolor white colored pencil
1 vinyl eraser
1 sketch/drawing pad
4-8 sheets of black construction paper
scissors
glue stick
black marker

Each unit in the course is divided into four sections.

Section one introduces the student to the art materials they will be using for that unit, and then the student practices with the materials.

Section two explains the topic of the unit in more detail. The student creates a work of art from objects that are around them, concentrating on the topic of the unit.

Section three shows master works of art that clearly demonstrate the topic being studied in the unit. Again, the student creates another work of art practicing the topic of the unit.

Section four combines all the sections and previous units, teaching the student to create another work of art based on their own interests.

I really liked that this course started with the basics and then built on them. Basic outline drawing is taught first, and then more details are added as each unit continues.

Every lesson has its own objectives, which really helps the student focus in on the topic of the unit.
1. Observe the world around you
2. Learn what to look for in that subject matter
3. Learn to focus on only one element of art at a time while creating your masterpiece

As your child progresses through the course, these are the topics that they will practice.

  1. Line: outline drawing of forms
  2. Space: positioning your paper, moving your hand
  3. Shape: reverse drawing. Black paper, white pencil
  4. Texture: using the pencil in different ways
  5. Value: adding darkness and light
  6. Form: 3-dimensional drawing
  7. Animal forms
  8. Human forms
  9. Man-made forms: groups of objects

In the above picture, my daughter used line, space, texture, value, and form to draw her snowman figurine.  I would show you mine, but it’s not near as good.

In this screenshot from the online course, the teacher demonstrates the outline drawing of a squirrel with this reverse drawing.

This screenshot shows the lesson on creating value in your artwork with light and darkness.

The lessons are very well done and easy to follow.

I would highly recommend this Beginner Level, Art Core I, Drawing with Graphite Pencils from ARTistic Pursuits. My daughter and I had a fun time creating our own masterpieces and we each learned a great deal.
