Danika Cooley’s newest publications are part of her Who, What, Why series and features three new books about the Bible book of Exodus titled Who was Moses?, What was the Tabernacle?, and Why Did the Exodus Happen?
Your kids can learn about the Exodus with these three books that cover the time frame from an overview of God’s covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob plus a quick look at Joseph and then all the way to Moses’ death.
Danika does a great job explaining things such as the need for the Passover and the purpose of the Tabernacle.
Your child’s learning will come easy as the information is easy to read and written in somewhat of a conversational style. The facts and explanations are true to the Bible and any Scripture verses are from the English Standard Version.
There is plenty of spacing on the page between lines and the font is a good size for early readers.
Younger readers may need help reading some of the larger words like hospitality, important, institutions, pomegranates, embroidered, tremendous, established, oppressors, diligently, tambourines, extraordinary, Mediterranean……
There is a good amount of black and white illustrations in each book. They go along well with each topic being discussed.
Some of the pictures ended up being printed directly over the center crease which makes the picture a little harder to see. It’s not a deal breaker by any means, but it is disappointing since they are nice illustrations.
There’s no reading schedule or plan for this set; you or your child can read as much as you want anytime. There are approximately 90 pages in each book and the recommended ages are 6-11year olds.
I have not seen any recommendations for which book to read first, second, or third, but in my opinion Why did the Exodus Happen? would be a great place to start since it gives an entire overview.
For the second book, I would suggest Who was Moses? as this teaches us about Moses’ past, his character traits, as well as his life events that lead him to being the leader of the Israelites.
Lastly, I would read What is the Tabernacle? This book zooms in to take a close look at this traveling worship center; what it’s made up of, how it was used, and God’s purpose for it.
A nice timeline is at the end of each book that covers the entire period from Abraham to the death of Moses.
I would highly recommend Who was Moses?, What was the Tabernacle?, and Why Did the Exodus Happen? to any Christian family that has children interested in learning about the Israelites during the time of the Exodus.
Homeschooling families can also get a starting off point with these books for more in-depth study on each topic.
Children church or Sunday school teachers could also use these books in their classes and read a couple of chapters each week.
